Don’t Re-Invent the Wheel
It’s inevitable that I run into a website that has decided that navigational terms like HOME, ABOUT, TESTIMONIAL, CONTACT, and so on, are just way to pedestrian. Someone, whether it’s the site owner, developer, designer, and/or marketing, has decided that they are way to cool for such conventional terms. This is a big mistake and is confusing for users.
Naming conventions are critical for users to make decisions. And if you want users to stick around and not hit the back button, be clear how to navigate through your site so users can find the information they want.
The best approach is to keep your naming conventions in line what users are accustomed to. Keep it simple, don’t be novel, funny, or ambiguous and save your flashes of creativity for when they will be better appreciated.
